Snowball Quilt

This quilt I hoped to have on my bed for winter, and it happened!

This quilt had been sitting since March quilt retreat with only the borders still needing to be added and the quilting to be completed.  I am happy to say it is complete!

I designed this quilt all from scratch, which did cause some issues...but I was able to work them out.

Night's Sky

Since my nephew is getting a quilt for Christmas, and my son needs a larger quilt also, I figured I better get busy.  I ended up deciding on Night’s Sky by Jaybird quilts for the pattern.  It went well with all of the bright colored fabric I had picked out.  I also have to say that I have fallen in love with Julie’s patterns.  She gives such great directions these quilt block centers went together during my weekend at fall quilt retreat.  So happy with how this one turned out.  Hope my son likes it!

Red, White and Black Couch Quilt

A goal is complete!

Great news – This quilt is complete.  Here it is, in its new home….my living room. It’s a much needed addition to the room as I always seem to be cold when I spend evenings in the living room.

Sister's Choice

More great news is that I finished my Sister’s Choice quilt (Bonnie Hunter pattern) and it is on its way to my sister and her husband across the country in the state of Washington.  Hopefully they will like the new addition to their home.

Science Fair

So I am now addicted to Jaybird quilt patterns.  Here is the first one that I completed.

Earlier this year my nephew and son both moved from toddler beds to their “big boy beds”.  As such neither of them had quilts large enough for their new beds.  This Christmas that will change.  I have just finished the binding on the quilt for my nephew.  It is Science Fair by Jaybird Quilts and should be bright and full of cheer in his room.

Here is a list of my original goals.

Q4 Finish-a-long Goals

Time to set Q4 Goals!  This quarter I hope to finish some quilts for Christmas, and have a productive and fun retreat

Quilt #1 – Red/White and Black couch Quilt
This quilt has been on my list for a while now, and it is time for it to be finished.  When it is complete it will be put on my couch.  I used this one as a practice quilt in June and have no intentions to ever put it in any shows.  I just need to bind and label it.

Quilt #2 - Sister's Choice
This quilt is a present for my sister for Christmas, it is a Bonnie Hunter pattern called Sister's Choice.  It is nearing completion and only needs to have the binding and label put on.  I was able to get the quilting done last quarter but ran out of time to start the binding.

Quilt #3 - Science Fair
I still have a ways to go on this one but would like to have it done in time for Christmas.  It is a present for my nephew.   The layout needs to be finalized, then it can be pieced, quilted, bound and gifted.

Quilt #4 – Dr. Who
Next up on my list is my Dr Who Quilt.  It is still in same place it was last quarter, except I did un-sew a piece of sashing that just did not look right.  Other than that I have just been moving it out of my way.  Hopefully in this quarter I can complete the quilting (sashing), bind, label and put a hanging sleeve on it.

Quilt #5: Zig-Zag Batik Quilt
This quilt is black and turquoise with some fabric that I really love.  Once I add borders it is ready to quilt.  I am hoping to have this completed this quarter.  Unfortunately I don't have a photo of this with me.

Quilt #6: Snowball Quilt
So the Snowball quilt would look wonderful on my bed this winter.  I finally added some additional blocks and sewed them all together.  Hopefully at retreat I will add the borders, then it will be ready to quilt.  I want to have this one done this quarter so it can be used when the snow starts falling.

Quilt #7 - Son's quilt
So last on my list is a quilt for my son.  The fabric has been selected and purchased, now I just need to start.  I think I will probably do another Jaybird's quilts pattern.

These I will get to next year.
Grandmother's flower garden – Need to decide on a design
Wall Hanging 1: Totem Poles – need to finish the applique

Q3 Finishes Link-up - Easy Street

My second goal for this quarter did not get touch, but I am happy to say that my third goal "Easy Street" is complete and hung in our quilt show.

Here is a picture from the show:

Unfortunately that is all of the quilts I finished for Q3.  Hoping to get some more done in Q4 since I have a 4 1/2 day retreat!

Q3 Goals - Finish-a-long

Time to set Q3 Goals!  This quarter is going to be very ambitious as my guild is having a quilt show in September, and I would like to enter some of my finished quilts in to the show.

Quilt #1 – Boarder of the month
In June I was able to get the nine patch & shoofly block boarder completely quilted.  This Quarter I need to finish quilting the applique border, and I need to start the final two boarder.  I will be very excited if I can get the binding, label, and hanging sleeve on before the September 26th quilt show!

Quilt #2 – Dr. Who
Next up on my list is my Dr Who Quilt.  It is still in same place it was last quarter, except I did un-sew a piece of sashing that just did not look right.  Other than that I have just been moving it out of my way.  Hopefully in this quarter I can complete the quilting (sashing), bind, label and put a hanging sleeve on it.

Quilt #3 – Easy Street mystery
Last month I took this quilt it to my long-arm quilter, it should be back at the beginning of September.  I plan to then bind, label and put a sleeve on it.

Quilt #4 – Red/White and Black couch Quilt
If I get this quilt done it will then be put on my couch.  I used this one as a practice quilt in June and have no intentions to ever put it in any shows.  I just need to bind and label it but since it is just going on my couch it’s last on my list.

UFO List – This list might get touched in Q4 but the chances of me doing more than moving the pieces around the room this quarter, are slim to none.
Quilt 5: Zig-Zag Batik Quilt – Needs borders
Quilt 6: Snowball Quilt – Needs more blocks
Quilt 7: Sister's Choice Quilt – Ready to be quilted
Quilt 8: Grandmother's flower garden – Need to decide on a design
Wall Hanging 1: Totem Poles – need to finish the applique

Q2 Finish-a-long Completed Goals.

It's that time....time to see what Goals I have completed this quarter.  This quarter was really busy for me and I mainly worked on Quilt #4, my Border of the Month Quilt.  I am hoping to get it finished in time for my guilds September Quilt show.  Unfortunately it is not done yet.

Quilt 1 – Finished!
First up is a supper secret baby quilt for a friend and fellow quilter.  The top is made out of Batik's, it just needs to have the quilting, binding and label finished.  I finished this quilt – check it out here.

Quilt 2 – Finished!
The next on my list is a special quilt for my cousin who is expecting in May.  It is a fun animal quilt.  The top is done and I am scheduled to quilt it on April 26th.  I was able to get this quilt completed and to it’s new home before my cousins baby was born.  Check it out here.

Quilt 3 – NOT done.
Next up on my list is my Dr Who Quilt.  It is still in close to the stage I started with.  I did un-sew a piece of sashing that just did not look right.  Other than that I have just been moving it out of my way.  Hopefully in Q3 I can finish this quilt, as I want to put it into my guilds quilt show.

Quilt 4 – NOT done.
Finally on my list is my Border of the month quilt.  It is a long process but the end is in sight.  Hopefully I will finish this in Q3.

For my stretch goals – I only touched two of the quilts, and neither is finished.
Quilt 5: Zig-Zag Batik Quilt – No progress
Quilt 6: Snowball Quilt – No progress
Quilt 7: Sister's Choice Quilt– No progress
Quilt 8: Easy Street Quilt– Took it to the quilter!!
Quilt 9: Red/White and Black couch Quilt – Quilted it!  Now to bind and label it!
Quilt 10: Grandmother's flower garden– No progress

Q2 Finish-a-long: Monkey Quilt

My second goal for the finish-a-long was to complete a baby quilt for my cousin.  She liked two quilts I made last year that had animal heads so I knew the perfect quilt.  Stephanie at Quilt Addicts Anonymous had the perfect pattern, so I purchased it and was well on my way to completing the quilt.  My cousin loved the quilt and is now waiting the arrival of her baby boy.

Here is the completed quilt:

Q2 Finish - Secret Batik Baby Quilt

My first goal for Q2 of the Finish-a-long was a Secret Batik Baby Quilt.  I started the quilt at retreat in March and finished it just before the baby shower in April.  The quilt below I saw in a magazine and loved it.  The front is made from batiks and the back is Illini fabric (her husband went to U of I).

Since my friend was also a quilter I got this adorable cake at the local grocery store.

One done and much more to go.

Q2 Finish-a-long Goals

It's that time....time to commit to my goals for the Q2 Finish-a-long.

Quilt 1
First up is a supper secret baby quilt for a friend and fellow quilter.  The top is made out of Batik's, it just needs to have the quilting, binding and label finished. Sorry no photo till it's complete.  Shhhhh.

Quilt 2
The next on my list is a special quilt for my cousin who is expecting in May.  It is a fun animal quilt.  The top is done and I am scheduled to quilt it on April 26th.  Can't post a photo till it's done, but I can hint that the animal is hanging from a branch.

Quilt 3
Next up on my list is my Dr Who Quilt.  It is getting close to being done.  I did quilt as you go, so I need to add sashing to the back side and then finish the quilting and pick out binding.  I am hoping to get this one done this quarter as I want to enter it into our upcoming quilt show.

Quilt 4
Next up on my list is my Border of the Month Quilt.  I am working on the hand quilting, and then will need to bind it.

Stretch Goals - hoping I can get them complete
Quilts 5 & 6
Last month I started two new quilts at retreat a Zig-Zag Batik Quilt and a Snowball Quilt.  I would really like to complete both of them and have them ready to use.

Q1 Finishes - Summary

For the 2014 Q1 Finish-a-long I set some goals which can be found here.

First let's start off with the Dr. Who Quilt.

For my Doctor Who quilt the final blocks were release and I finished them as soon as I could.  I then began working on the quilting.  Right after quilting the last block my machine started having issues, and had to go to the shop.  Since I did quilt as you go, I have 20 quilted blocks and that is as far as I have gotten.  I am glad to report that my machine is fixed and I can continue work this weekend on my projects.  Unfortunately the Dr. Who quilt will join my Q2 goals as it is unfinished.

Now on a happy note let's talk about what I DID get done!

My zig-zag quilt is a group quilt.  Everyone made 4-9 patches and then I am responsible for finishing the quilt.  I am happy to say that the quilt has been completed!  It can be seen here.

Last year sometime I took a class, and make a log cabin top during that class.  It is finally finished.  Not sure where this one will end up, but it might be donated to charity quilts for my local quilt guild.

I also had a 1600 UFO that needed to be finished.  I decided to applique a lotus follower on the top, and have finished the quilting and binding.  It is now complete. Check it out here.

My Hexi table runner is quilted and complete.  I ended up quilting it by machine as I felt it would hold up better.  It still has not been washed, and therefore is not on display, but it is complete!

The last of my goals was to complete a baby quilt for my Husband’s cousin who was had their baby in March.  This may seem like a distant relationship to be giving a quilt to, but I grew up knowing my husband’s cousin, so I have known him longer than my husband J.  The baby quilt is complete and has been gifted, so now I can share it.  The Mom and son are doing well and started using the quilt right away!

I can’t believe I met most of my goals for this quarter!  I have lots in store for next quarter, and am already beginning the list.

See everyone in a few days for my list of Q2 goals.  I already am starting the list, but will have more details soon.  As this list is too long to finish in Q2.
  • Baby Quilt for expecting friend
  • Baby Quilt for expecting cousin
  • Dr. Who Quilt
  • Border of the Month Quilt
  • Zig-Zag Batik Quilt
  • Snowball Quilt
  • Sister's Choice Quilt
  • Easy Street Quilt
  • Red/White and Black couch Quilt
See you soon.

Baby Quilt - Finish-a-long

I love to make baby quilts for family, and when I found out my husband's cousin and his wife were expecting I starting to determine what quilt to make the new baby.  Just before I started I sent a message to my husband's aunt to find out if the gender was know, unfortunately she said they were waiting to find out. However later that night I got a new message saying that they decided to find out, after all, and that a boy was expected in March.

The new addition to our extended family was born in early March and is doing well.  The quilt was gifted through the mother's parents (as the new baby lives out of town), and was put right to use.

Here it is.  It was backed with Red and Yellow material.  The colors of the high school the parents and I graduated from.

Hexi Table Runner - Finish-a-long

One of my first goals for the finish-a-long was to finish my Hexi-Table runner.  This table runner will eventually end up in my living room, but first I need to clean up my son's toys.  For now it is complete and living in my Quilting room.  I machine hand pieced, machine quilted, and hand finished the edges.  It matches the side table hexi's that I complete a year or two ago.

Checkout my other goals here: http://quiltsbyheather.blogspot.com/2014/01/finish-long-q1-goals.html

1600 Quilt - Finish-a-long

For about 2 years this quilt has sat unfinished because I thought it needed something besides just the jelly roll strips.  One day I determined that a lotus flower would look good.  I then used some of the fancy stitches on my machine to quilt the border.  It is backed with white flannel, and is now nice and cozy since it has been washed.

ZigZag quilt

One of my finishes for the Q1 finish-a-long is this Zig-Zag quilt which is a gift for a fellow quilter.  It is made up of block that four individuals plus myself made.  I then pieced the quilt, had another person quilt it and then finished the binding.  It is now ready to be gifted this weekend.

Log cabin - Finished

I finished the Log cabin quilt!  There was some stretching which made it a bit wonky, thought. Can't wait to get another UFO complete!

Finish-a-long Q1 goals

For the 2014 Q1 Finish-a-long here are my goals:

My Doctor Who quilt is waiting on the final 3 blocks to be release, then I will be adding the borders for each block, sashing, quilting and binding it.\

My zig-zag quilt is a group quilt.  Everyone made 4-9 patches and then I am responsible for finishing the quilt.  I need to finish the last 8 half square triangles, then assemble the quilt, quilt it and bind it.

Last year sometime I took a class, and make a log cabin top during that class.  I would really like to finish the quilt this quarter.
I also have a 1600 UFO that needs to be finished, as it has been in this state for at least 2 years.  It just seems like it needs something more

I also have this table runner to finish by hand.

Finally I have a baby quilt which is a surprise that I need to finish.  It's red, green, blue and yellow.  I can't show a picture here as I don't want to spoil the surprise.

That is my list of goals for this quarter.
